The key to beautiful stained glass artwork is a well thought out stained glass patterns. And suprisingly, some people just getting started in stained glass have no clue where to start to find a design to start their project with. I'm glad to say, though, that you can find a design with just a little imagination and by keeping your eyes open. The only skills that it takes is an eye for things of beauty that you encounter on a daily basis, and a pen and paper. No more skills are needed or required.

A quick and easy option is to go online and purchase stained glass designs from a glass shop that sells pattern books, but this is an expensive option if you are on a budget. You don't need to look far to find inspiration for your next pattern or stained glass piece. Anytime you need some inspiration, simple start taking notice of the different art and shapes that surround you everday and you will start seeing new ideas for your glass patterns. Perhaps your grandmother loves to quilt and has a variety of quilting books. Quilt patterns create beautiful stained glass design. You might even have some piece of art that is around your house that you might be able to convert into a stained glass piece. The key to a great pattern is something that will be relatively easy to trace and does not have parts that are extremely intricate.

After you have decided what you want to make into a stained glass pattern, you need to transfer that onto paper. If the piece you are tracing has some opacity, a light table will make this job easy. Holding it up to a window is another low-tech method that often works well. After the tracing is complete, have your image transferred onto two sheets of heavy paper (a card stock will work well). I would recommend that you save one of them in a folder so you can always access your previously made patterns. You might even be able to collect yourself a great collections of patterns, maybe you can even give away your own uniquely designed free stained glass patterns With your other piece, that will be your actual working design.
